MENOMONIE, Wis.--Seth Maier has resigned as the University of Wisconsin-Stout baseball coach to accept a position in the private sector.

After four all-conference seasons as a Blue Devil player, two seasons as a Blue Devil baseball assistant coach and the last two years as the head coach, Maier has accepted a position with Wells Fargo in the Twin Cities area.

“It was a tough decision for me,” said Maier. “It’s tough because of the people, the administration, the coaches and the outstanding student/athletes I have been able to work with. Having been here for 10 years, they have become like family.

“But I am excited for the new opportunities ahead of me because of my own personal family.”

Maier was a four-time all-conference player with the Blue Devils, redshirting during the 2002 season, then playing in 2003. After a year off, Maier returned to Stout from 2005-07.  Maier earned his stripes at a number of positions - outfield, third base, shortstop and first base, where he played his final two seasons. Maier was the WIAC player of the year in 2007.

Appearing in nearly every Blue Devil offensive category, Maier is the all-time at-bat leader (577), hits leader (244) and doubles leader (50). He is fourth in runs scored (137), eighth in home runs (21), second in runs batted in (140), sixth in batting average (.388), and ninth in slugging percentage (.612).

Maier became a Blue Devil assistant coach in 2008 and, as the assistant coach, took over the on-field third base coaching and recruiting duties in 2009. Maier was named the Blue Devil head coach after Craig Walter resigned at the conclusion of the 2009 season.  During his two years as head coach, Maier developed all-conference performers Brian Giebel, Matt Guida, Jon Schuch, Jake Duske and Nate Hanson.

“We wanted to leave the program in better shape than when we got here, and I think we have accomplished that,” Maier said. “I know the program is going in the right direction.”

In addition to coaching at UW-Stout, Maier was the on-field manager of the Alexandria, Minn., Beetles of the summer Northwoods League in 2009. He was an assistant coach for the Beetles in 2008.

Maier also was an instructor in the physical education department.

The search for Maier’s successor is currently in progress.
