Blugolds Secure Third Consecutive Women’s Golf Championship

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire secured its third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) women’s golf championship following three days of competition at Bull’s Eye Country Club.
The league crown for the Blugolds is the eighth in program history. It also marks the second time they have won three straight first-place trophies - a feat they accomplished from 2004-06.
UW-Eau Claire totaled 974 strokes during the 54-hole competition to exceed the second-place sum of 1028 strokes by UW-Stevens Point. UW-Stout finished third with 1029 strokes, UW-Whitewater fourth with 1037, UW-Platteville fifth with 1065, UW-River Falls sixth with 1093 and UW-Oshkosh seventh with 1098.
With the victory, UW-Eau Claire also secured the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Championship which will be conducted May 2012.
UW-Stevens Point’s Mary Welch claimed medalist honors in the 54-player field with 238 strokes to nip UW-Eau Claire’s Catherine Wagner who compiled 239 strokes. Welch’s individual title is the first in program history.
UW-Whitewater’s Nicole Wescott placed third with 241 strokes, while UW-Eau Claire’s Maggie Lattery, Emily Swift and Sara Mattes took fourth, fifth and sixth with scores of 243, 246 and 250, respectively. Tied for seventh with 255 were UW-Platteville’s Kelsey Lieving, UW-Stout’s Brittany McNett-Emmerich and UW-Whitewater’s Megan Ramp. UW-Eau Claire’s Kate Engler and Kitty Nicastro tied for 10th with 256.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire's Maggie Lattery; UW-Oshkosh's Theresa Henke; UW-Platteville's Ellyn Subak; UW-River Falls' Kate Gjerning; UW-Stevens Point's Kayla Johnson; UW-Stout's Kitty Nicastro and UW-Whitewater's Amy Peters.
UW-Eau Claire head coach Meghan Sobotta and UW-Stout head coach Howie Samb shared Coach of the Year honors, while UW-Eau Claire’s Emily Swift claimed the WIAC Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete Award.
