MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater’s Levell Coppage was voted the Player of the Year to top the 2010 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Football Team that was selected by the league coaches. In addition, UW-Whitewater head coach Lance Leipold was chosen the George Chryst Coach of the Year.
Coppage, a junior running back, secured first team recognition for the third consecutive year. He leads the conference with 1,121 rushing yards, 15 rushing touchdowns and 90 points scored, while ranking eighth with 1,126 yards of total offense. Coppage has surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark in eight of nine games this year, including a season-high 179 yards against UW-Stevens Point Oct. 30. The performance against the Pointers also included a season-high 38 carries.
Coppage holds the WIAC career record with 71 rushing touchdowns, while ranking second with 4,689 rushing yards and eighth with 791 rushing attempts. He has topped the 100-yard rushing mark in 26 of his 37 career games.
Coppage’s selection represents the 10th time a Warhawk has claimed the conference’s player of the year plaque.
Repeat selections on the first from a year ago included: UW-River Falls’ Greg Klingelhutz, UW-Stevens Point’s Jared Jenkins, Matt Lunder and Shane Winterfeldt, UW-Stout’s Craig Warminski and UW-Whitewater’s Aaron Rusch, Robbie Ustruck and Matt Weber. Jenkins, Lunder and Warminski also claimed first team accolades during the 2008 campaign.
Leipold was voted the George Chryst Coach of the Year for the second straight year after directing the Warhawks to their sixth straight WIAC crown. UW-Whitewater currently owns a 25-game winning streak - the longest streak in the NCAA (any division). He is in his fourth season in charge of the Warhawks and boasts a 52-3 record.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. It included one member from each school.
