Day One Recap

UW-La Crosse Secures 19th Consecutive Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship

UW-La CrosseOSHKOSH, Wis.--Bobby Riley won three events and Paul Zdroik two to lead University of Wisconsin-La Crosse to a first-place finish at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship held Friday and Saturday (May 1-2) at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium.  It was the 19th straight title for the Eagles and 45th overall.

Riley was named the Field Performer of the Meet after winning the shot put with a toss of 57-0 1/4 and the discus with a cast of 171-4 on Saturday and the javelin with a throw of 178-1 on Friday. He previously won the shot put in 2007.

Paul Zdroik won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:05.92 with other event winners for the Eagles consisting of:  Zach Wilhemy in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:54.29, Paul Yerhot in the 400-meter run with a time of 49.30 and David Stauder in the high jump with a leap of 6-8 3/4.

Keith Ingram of UW-Stevens Point was voted the Track Performer of the Meet after winning both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash with times of 10.89 and 21.72, respectively.

UW-Stevens Point also had Mike Dellemann win the decathlon with 5,992 points and the quartet of Nick Dax, Brad Koback, Adam Lang and Pat Leonard capture the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:19.47.

UW-Platteville picked up two victories in the hurdles when Andy Melby won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.66 and Mitch Spees won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.96.

Other events winners on Saturday included James Simms of UW-Oshkosh in the triple jump with a mark of 48-1 1/4 and Matt Kovnesky of UW-Whitewater in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.39.

UW-Stout's quartet of Daniel Drewek, Sam Flood, Dan Strong and Kendall Wade won the 400-meter relay with a time of 41.29.

Brad Peterson of UW-La Crosse claimed the Max Sparger Scholar-Athlete award.

Named to the Larry Zirgibel All-Sportsmanship Team were:  UW-Eau Claire’s Frankie Adams, UW-La Crosse’s Brad Peterson, UW-Oshkosh’s Billy Klitz, UW-Platteville’s Andy Melby, UW-River Falls’ Toni Casci, UW-Stevens Point’s Travis Nechuta, UW-Stout’s Jon Wolff, UW-Superior’s Rob Tatinger and UW-Whitewater’s Josh Ireland.
