UW-Whitewater’s Hahn Selected to Attend Elite Coaches Camp
RELEASED: Wednesday, January 31, 2007
Whitewater, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater track & field assistant coach Dave Hahn was selected by USA Track & Field (USATF) to attend and participate in the USATF/United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Emerging Elite Coaches Clinic in July, 2006 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California.
Coaches were selected to attend the camp based on their abilities to develop outstanding athletes in their respective events and their projected potential to develop future Olympic medalists. Five coaches for each event were selected from the applicants. Hahn, a specialist in throws, was among the five coaches selected to take part in the throwing clinic. All participants had travel, room, and meals paid for by USATF.
The clinicians for the throw clinic included Hal Connolly, the 1956 Olympic gold medalist and former world record holder in the hammer throw; Mac Wilkins, the 1976 Olympic gold medalist and former world record holder in the discus; Duncan Atwood, an Olympic bronze medalist in the javelin; and Bob MacKay, a former elite level shot putter and current coach at Moorpark College in California.
Hahn, a member of the UW-Whitewater track & field coaching staff since 2002, has helped UW-Whitewater’s men’s throwers reach All-American status 16 times (5 indoor, 11 outdoor) and women's throwers reach All-American status three times (two indoor, one outdoor) during his tenure. Hahn was a four-time All-American in the hammer and 35 pound weight throws in his college career at UW-Platteville.
Included in the UW-Whitewater throwers that have earned All-American status since 2002, are Jeremy Wendt (2002 and 2003 outdoor hammer, 2003 and 2004 indoor weight throw), Justin Minor (2002 and 2003 outdoor hammer), Kurt Malnar (2002 indoor shot put and weight throw), Tabitha Fendrick (2002 indoor shot put), Beth Proeber (2004 indoor weight throw, 2005 outdoor hammer throw), Pete Ringquist (2004 and 2006 outdoor discus), Ross Kapp (2005 indoor weight throw, 2005 and 2006 indoor shot put, 2006 outdoor hammer), and Dan Hytinen (2006 outdoor discus). Wendt was a three-time national champion (2003 and 2004 weight throw, 2004 hammer throw), and Kapp was a national champion in the 2006 hammer throw. Since Hahn joined the coaching staff the men’s track & field team has finished among the top ten teams in the nation three times in both the indoor and outdoor season with their top finish coming in 2004 when the Warhawks finished second in the indoor championship. The UW-Whitewater throws program was ranked second in the nation among Division III schools in 2006 by The Thrower’s Page with the men’s team having the highest point total in Division III.
UW-Eau Claire Cross Country/Track & Field Make Coaching Changes
RELEASED: Wednesday, August 30, 2006
Eau Claire, Wis.--The resignation of Tracy Yengo as the UW-Eau Claire head women's cross country and track & field coaches has triggered some changes in the staffing of the men's and women's programs, according to Director of Athletics Scott Kilgallon.
Yengo stepped down after 10 years as the Blugold women's cross country and track & field coaches to accept a fulltime teaching position in the university's Department of Kinesiology.
As a result, Kilgallon has named men's cross country and track coach Chip Schneider as Director of Operations for both the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs. He also has named Brian Falk as the head cross country coach and assistant track & field coach for the men's and women's programs.
During Yengo's tenure, the Blugolds were the NCAA Division III cross country runner-up in 1997 when she was also named the WIAC Coach of the Year. She has taken three teams to the NCAA nationals and coached two All-Americans. In track, the past decade, the Blugolds have had 30 All-American finishes with 11 individuals and a relay team. The most decorated athletes during her regime were hurdlers Breanna McMullen and Jen Stafslien and pole vaulter Steph Barnes. The Blugolds finished as high as eighth in the NCAA outdoor meet in 2005 and 13th in the NCAA indoor meet this past season.
Schneider, a conference and national champion while competing at UW-Platteville, has been the Blugold men's track coach since 2002-03 and the men's cross country coach since 2003-04.
Falk has been a teacher for 16 years and a coach for 19 years, most recently at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania. As the primary distance coach in the track and field program for nine seasons at Dickinson, Falk has had 11 individual Centennial Conference champions, nine NCAA championship qualifiers and seven All-Americans. Since 2001, he has also served as an assistant in a women's cross country program that has won all five Centennial Conference titles, three Mid-East regional titles and finished three times in the top ten at the NCAA meet.
Falk has been a health/physical education teacher at Susquehanna Township High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania since 1990. He was the head cross country coach from 1991-2000, rejuvenating a boys' program that had only three athletes when he started and reviving the girls' cross country program as a team sport in 1995.
He is currently involved as an assistant coach, clinician and conference organizer for an online service that provides personal coaching to adult recreational runners.
Falk earned his undergraduate degree in Physical Education and Teacher Education from Temple University in 1988 and his master's in Exercise Science from McDaniel College, formerly Western Maryland College, in 2003.
