UW-Eau Claire's Schuna and UW-Stevens Point's LaLonde Named To Academic All-America Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Team

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's John Schuna and UW-Stevens Point's Mark LaLonde have been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Second Team.
The Academic All-America Team is comprised of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA athletes from around the country.
Schuna, a senior from Hudson, Wis., is majoring in exercise management and posts a 3.84 grade point average. He was the recipient of UW-Eau Claire's Super Six Award and also claimed the WIAC Max Sparger Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete Award this year. Schuna is a nine-time All-American (indoor and outdoor) and claimed the indoor national title in the shot put in 2002. He is also a two-time outdoor conference champion in the shot put, winning the event in 2002 and 2004.
LaLonde, a senior from Park Falls, Wis., carries a 3.79 grade point average and is majoring in business administration. He was named UW-Stevens Point's Male Athlete of the Year this season and also received the 2004 WIAC Max Sparger Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Award. LaLonde is a five-time All-American (indoor and outdoor) and a two-time All-American in cross country. He is also a three-time conference champion with titles in the 5,000-meter run, 10,000-meter run and steeplechase.

Three Named To Academic All-District Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Team

Madison, Wis.--Three Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) individuals have been named to the 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Five College Division Men's Track and Field/Cross Country Team. UW-Eau Claire's John Schuna and UW-Stevens Point's Mark LaLonde were selected to the first team, while UW-Oshkosh's Kevin Deering was a second team choice.
Schuna, a senior from Hudson, Wis., is majoring in exercise management and posts a 3.84 grade point average. Deering, a senior from Mukwonago, Wis., is majoring in broadfield natural science and maintains a 3.58 grade point average. He received the WIAC Max Sparger Outdoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete Award earlier this year and also was the recipient of his school's Outstanding Senior Student-Athlete Award. Deering recently captured the outdoor national title in the decathlon to secure All-America honors for the third time in his career (indoor and outdoor). He was named the conference's Outdoor Outstanding Field Athlete of the Meet after claiming titles in the decathlon, high jump and javelin earlier this season.
The academic all-district team is comprised of all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA student-athletes from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Minnesota and is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
Schuna and LaLonde are now eligible for the Academic All-America squad, which will be announced on June 21.

Bloomington,
Ill.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse won its fifth straight NCAA Division
III men's indoor track and field championship following completion of the two-day
national meet held March 11-12 at the Shirk Center on the campus of Illinois
Wesleyan University.
It is the first time in NCAA Division III history that a team has won five consecutive indoor track and field team titles. The Eagles, who claimed the 12th NCAA Division III men's indoor track and field title in school history (2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 1997, 1994, 1993, 1992, 1991, 1988, 1987), won this year's title with 53 team points. Lincoln (Pa.) finished second with 38 points, followed by UW-Platteville with 33 points, Nebraska Wesleyan with 32 points and North Central (Ill.) with 27 points.
UW-Oshkosh finished sixth with 25 points, UW-Whitewater tied for seventh with 19 points, UW-Stevens Point finished 22nd with 8.5 points and UW-Eau Claire tied for 28th with six points.
UW-Platteville's third-place finish is the best in school history, along with the 33 team points accumulated at the national meet.
UW-La Crosse's Nate Olson won the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.11. His time was the best in NCAA Division III this season and a Shirk Center record.
The Eagles' 4 x 400-meter relay team claimed the national title with a NCAA Division III best and Shirk Center record time of 3:15.87. Olson, Jeremy Deterville, Tony Marcinek and Nolan Hietpas were members of the winning team.
UW-Platteville's Ryan Kleimenhagen secured national titles in the 800-meter run and one-mile run. He claimed the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.98 and captured the one-mile run with a NCAA Division III meet record and Shirk Center record time of 4:16.49. Kleimenhagen was named the Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet for his efforts.
UW-Whitewater's Aaron Henderson won the triple jump with a leap of 48-6 (14.78m) to become the third Warhawk in school history to win an individual national title.
The top eight finishers in each event at the national championship earned All-America honors.

UW-Eau Claire's Schuna and UW-Platteville's Kleimenhagen Named Men's Indoor Track and Field Co-Scholar-Athletes

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's John Schuna and UW-Platteville's Ryan Kleimenhagen have been named 2005 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Max Sparger Men's Indoor Track and Field Co-Scholar-Athletes, it was announced recently by WIAC Commissioner Gary Karner.
Schuna, a senior from Hudson, Wis., is majoring in exercise management and maintains a 3.80 grade point average. He has been recognized on UW-Eau Claire's Dean's List six semesters and is a three-time member of the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll.
Schuna finished second at the conference meet in the shot put in 2004 and 2002. He has claimed All-America honors in the shot put the last two years, finishing fifth and sixth the last two seasons after winning the national title in 2002. Schuna is a three-time team MVP and holds the school record in the shot put.
Schuna has been a member of the UW-Eau Claire Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
Kleimenhagen, a senior from Oak Creek, Wis., carries a 3.304 grade point average, while majoring in health promotion. He has been named to UW-Platteville's Dean's List and Honor Roll.
Kleimenhagen was voted the 2005 Track Performer of the Meet at the WIAC championships after winning the 800-meter run and one-mile run titles. He won the league title and national championship in the 1,500-meter run last season and was also a member of the national champion distance medley relay team. Kleimenhagen broke the conference meet record in the one-mile run this year and also holds numerous school records.
Kleimenhagen is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and has also volunteered for a Highway Cleanup Project, National Girls in Sports Day and Kid's Night Out.
Also nominated for this year's scholar-athlete award were: UW-La Crosse's Dan Haumschild and Andrew Buchberger, UW-Oshkosh's Steve Pratt and UW-Stevens Point's Mathew Legel.
The WIAC Scholar-Athlete Award is sponsored by Culver's. In order to be nominated for the scholar-athlete award, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.25 grade point average, be in their last year of competition, or on schedule to graduate this academic year, and have competed for a minimum of two years.

Wis.--University of Wisconsin-La Crosse claimed its fourth straight Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) men's indoor track and field title
following completion of the two-day conference meet, which was held at UW-Platteville's
Williams Fieldhouse on March 4-5.
UW-La Crosse finished with 200.50 team points to outdistance UW-Whitewater for the second straight season. The Warhawks finished with 131 points, followed by UW-Oshkosh (98), UW-Platteville (78), UW-Stevens Point (75.50), UW-Eau Claire (59), UW-Stout (32), UW-River Falls (24) and UW-Superior (4).
The Eagles, who have now won 30 men's indoor track and field championships, claimed five individual titles and all three relay crowns at this year's league spectacle. Kevin Becker was voted the Field Performer of the Meet after winning the 35-pound weight throw with a conference meet record and NCAA provisional qualifying toss of 67-7.
Marcus Walgrave won the 55-meter dash with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 6.48, while Nate Olson claimed the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.26.
The Eagles' Herc Hyland secured the long jump with a NCAA provisional qualifying leap of 23-0 1/2 and Jon Heinz won the pole vault with NCAA provisional qualifying height of 16-4 3/4.
UW-Oshkosh's Nick Boehlke, Brandon Houle and Zach Johnson tallied individual titles during the two-day conference meet. Boehlke won the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:44.72, while Houle secured the shot put with a NCAA automatic qualifying heave of 56-10 1/4 and Zach Johnson claimed the heptathlon with 4,775 points.
UW-Platteville's Ryan Kleimenhagen was voted the Track Performer of the Meet after winning the 800-meter run and one-mile run. His time of 4:10.24 in the one-mile run established a conference meet record and was a NCAA automatic qualifying mark. Kleimenhagen secured the 800-meter run title with a time of 1:55.60.
UW-Stevens Point's Mark LaLonde won the 5,000-meter run with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:44.42 and his teammate, Mitch Ellis, secured the high jump with a height of 6-4 3/4.
UW-Whitewater's Aaron Henderson won the triple jump for the second time in his career with a NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 48-7 1/2. He also claimed the league title in 2003. The Warhawks' Joe Schmidt captured the 55-meter hurdles with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.67.
UW-Stout's Derek Gonzenbach won the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.65.
UW-La Crosse's Olson, Andrew Buchberger, Corey Carpentier and Lee Wienkes won the 4 x 200-meter relay with a time of 1:29.47. The 4 x 400-meter relay squad of Wienkes, Jonathan Doble, Eric Schmidt and Dan Haumschild posted a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:20.39. The distance medley relay quartet of Wienkes, Haumschild, Mike Herlihy and Gabe Siehr also posted a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 10:06.98.
UW-La Crosse head coach Mark Guthrie was voted the Coach of the Year by the league coaches for the fourth straight season and fifth time in his career (2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2000).

Three To Participate In USA Indoor Track and Field Championships
Three
Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) track and field student-athletes
will participate in the 2005 USA Indoor Track & Field Championships on February
25-27 in Boston. UW-La Crosse's Kevin Becker, UW-Platteville's Ryan Kleimenhagen
and UW-Oshkosh's Robyn Jarocki will compete in the event.
Becker will participate in the weight throw, while Kleimenhagen will compete
in the 1,500-meter run and Jarocki will partake in the weight throw and shot
put.
Becker is ranked ninth among all competitors in his event, while Kleimenhagen
is eighth and Jarocki is fifth in the weight throw and sixth in the shot put.
The USA Indoor Track & Field Championship meet is the world's oldest indoor
track championship, with the first meet held in 1888.
