MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stout all-arounder Meghan Hargens has been named the 2009 National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W) Division III West Region gymnast of the year, while Winona State University’s Beckie Rolbiecki was named the coach of the year.  Blue Devil assistant coach Jeremy Manthey was named the regional assistant coach of the year, while UW-Whitewater Athletics Director Paul Plinske claimed the administrator of the year prize.

Hargens, a junior from Rosemount, Minn., won her first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) all-around title and finished second at the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) championship in the all-around.  Hargens also earned individual All-American awards on the uneven bars and the floor exercise and was the WIAC uneven bars champion.

Hargens was the only NCAA Division III level gymnast to advance to the NCAA Division I regional meet.

Throughout the course of the season, Hargens hit on all 50 of her routines. Translation: she did not fall in any of her exercises all season long.  Hargens finished first in the all-around in her first 10 meets of the year.

A team captain, Hargens holds 14 of the top 15 all-time all-around scores in UW-Stout history.  She was the first UW-Stout gymnast to break 38.00 in the all-around, shattering her own school record with a 38.450 at Arizona in February.  She broke 38.00 six times this season and only once slipped below a 37.00.

Hargens' top individual event is the uneven bars.  She set a school record on the first night of the NCGA championship with a 9.725 and went on to finish fourth in the event.  Of the top 15 UW-Stout scores on the uneven bars, Hargens owns 12 of those scores.  Hargens' name is also sprinkled liberally in all-time scores for the vault, beam and floor exercise.

Rolbiecki is in her fourth season in charge of the Warriors and directed the squad to a third-place finish at this year’s WIAC championship and a fourth-place standing at the NCGA meet.  She also claimed WIAC coach of the year honors.

Manthey just completed his third year as an assistant for the Blue Devils.  He has worked seven seasons at the illustrious Camp Owens Gymnastics camp in northern Wisconsin.  Manthey has been coaching gymnastics since 2000, and got his start at the South Wood County YMCA.

Plinske earned the administrative prize for the second straight year.  He is in his fifth season as Athletics Director at UW-Whitewater.  Plinske is the chair of the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championships Committee and a member of the NCGA Division III Executive Committee.

MADISON, Wis.--The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Athletics program will host the 2011 National Collegiate Gymnastics Association (NCGA) Championships, March 25 and 26, NCGA officials recently announced.

“We appreciate the opportunity the NCGA has given us to host this prestigious event,” UW-Eau Claire Director of Athletics Scott Kilgallon said.

2011 will be the second time the Blugolds have hosted the event with the last time being 2003. It will also be the second year in a row the Blugolds will be a national championship site as they will host the NCAA Division III Softball Championships in 2010.

Blugold gymnastics head coach Jean DeLisle is also excited about the opportunity to showcase the Blugolds and UW-Eau Claire on a national level.

“With the history UW-Eau Claire has hosting large tournaments, along with the major renovations the McPhee Physical Education Center has had over the last year, nationals will be a great opportunity to showcase both our student-athletes and campus.”

RELEASED:  Thursday, March 26, 2009

MADISON, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Stout’s Meghan Hargens will participate in the NCAA Division I North Central Regional at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, Iowa, on April 4.  She is the only NCAA Division III gymnast that will compete in the event.

Division I, II and III gymnasts have the opportunity to qualify to the NCAA Division I Regionals. The NCAA counts the gymnasts' top six all-around scores of the current season. Hargens, who last year was a second alternate to the Division I meet, averaged 37.995, enough to earn the fifth and final all-around spot at the North Central Region, just edging past Danielle Goldman of Brigham Young.  All-arounders compete on all four events - vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise.

Utah State, coached by former UW-Stout coach Jeff Richards, will have several individual performers and alternates at the regional meet, as will the Air Force Academy and Brigham Young. Hargens' top individual event is the uneven bars.  She set a new school record on the first night of the National Collegiate Gymnastics Association championships with a 9.725 and went on to finish fourth in the event.  Of the top 15 UW-Stout scores on the uneven bars, Hargens owns 12 of those scores.
