UW-Eau Claire Secures Women’s Golf Crown
ARKDALE, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire won the 2009 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Golf Championship following 54 holes of competition at Northern Bay Golf Resort & Marina on Oct. 9-11.
The conference title for the Blugolds is the league-leading sixth in program history and first since 2006. UW-Eau Claire entered the final day with a 32-stroke advantage over UW-Whitewater and totaled 317 for a three-day sum of 963.
UW-Whitewater took second with 1005 strokes, while two-time defending champion UW-Stevens Point was third with 1039, UW-Stout fourth with 1059, UW-Platteville fifth with 1077, UW-Oshkosh sixth with 1128 and UW-River Falls seventh with 1135.
UW-Eau Claire’s margin of victory matched the largest in the 14-year history of the league festival, also achieved by UW-Whitewater over the Blugolds in the inaugural event in 1996.
UW-Eau Claire’s Katie Maurer earned her second straight individual crown with a three-day total of 227. She is the second player in conference history to win back-to-back first-place medals, joining former Blugold Maggie Loney who accomplished the feat in 2004 and 2005.
UW-Stevens Point’s Jessica Urban placed second after firing a 72 on the final day on the par 73 layout for the second-lowest score in WIAC championship archives. She finished the event with a 233.
UW-Eau Claire’s Catherine Wagner and Sara Mattes tied for third with 241, UW-Whitewater’s Chelsea Davis took fifth with 245, UW-Eau Claire’s Emily Swift, UW-Stout’s Becca Eggers and UW-Whitewater’s Gianna Tenuta tied for sixth with 249, UW-Whitewater’s Amy Peters was ninth with 250 and UW-Eau Claire’s Torie Ives and Katie Swift, along with UW-Stevens Point’s Danelle Olson tied for 10th with 251.
With the victory, UW-Eau Claire automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III Championship that will be held on May 11-14 at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. The national event will be hosted by Oglethorpe University and the Central Florida Sports Commission.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was announced for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. The team included one member from each school as selected by that school.
Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Katie Swift, UW-Oshkosh’s Emily Wichman, UW-Platteville’s Tricia Pawelski, UW-River Falls’ Kelly Gordh, UW-Stevens Point’s Jessica Urban, UW-Stout’s Kelsey Treptow and UW-Whitewater’s Lindsay Porter.
UW-Stout head coach Howie Samb was voted the Coach of the Year by the league coaches.
