UW-Stevens Point’s Urban Claims Second Straight Player of the Year Honor
MADISON, Wis.--For the second straight season, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Jessica Urban earned Player of the Year honors to headline the 10 individuals recognized on the 2009 All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Golf Team. The squad was selected based on Golfstat’s rankings of lowest stroke average versus par following the conclusion of the WIAC championship.
Urban is the second player in conference history to claim the honor in back-to-back seasons, joining UW-Eau Claire’s Maggie Loney who secured the prize in 2005 and 2006.
Urban is a four-time All-WIAC first team selection and accumulated a conference-best 77.4 stroke average in 14 rounds during the fall season. She placed second at the WIAC championship, while shooting a 72 during the third day - the second-lowest round in the 14-year history of the event. Urban claimed medalist honors at the Illinois Wesleyan Fall Classic, UW-Platteville Invitational and UW-Stevens Point Invitational.
Repeat selections on the first team included UW-Eau Claire’s Katie Maurer and UW-Whitewater’s Chelsea Davis. Maurer secured first team status for the second consecutive year after registering a team-best 77.7 stroke average in 11 rounds. She finished first at the WIAC championship for the second straight season and recorded four top-five finishes, including medalist honors at the Doug Georgianni Memorial Invitational.
Davis was a first team choice in 2008 and compiled a team-best 81.7 stroke average in 15 rounds. She earned medalist honors at the UW-Oshkosh Invitational and UW-Whitewater Invitational, while registering a fifth-place finish at the conference championship.
UW-Eau Claire’s Emily Swift and Catherine Wagner rounded out the five-member first team.
Second team selections consisted of: UW-Eau Claire’s Jamie Hauser, Tori Ives, Sara Mattes and Katie Swift, along with UW-Stevens Point’s Danelle Olson.
An All-Sportsmanship Team was chosen for individuals that displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. Named to the squad were: UW-Eau Claire’s Katie Swift, UW-Oshkosh’s Emily Wichman, UW-Platteville’s Tricia Pawelski, UW-River Falls’ Kelly Gordh, UW-Stevens Point’s Jessica Urban, UW-Stout’s Kelsey Treptow and UW-Whitewater’s Lindsay Porter.
UW-Stout head coach Howie Samb was voted the Coach of the Year by the league coaches.
