UW-Stevens Point Secures Second Straight Women’s Golf Championship
UW-Stevens Point won its second straight WIAC women’s golf championship following the 13th annual event that was held Oct. 3-5 at Northern Bay Golf Resort & Marina in Arkdale, Wis.
The Pointers also claimed the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship that will be held at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., May 13-16, 2009.
This year’s league championship was originally scheduled for 54 holes, but reduced to 45 holes due to inclement weather during the final round.
UW-Stevens Point posted a 45-hole total of 822 to outdistance UW-Eau Claire’s second-place sum of 825. UW-Whitewater finished third with 855, UW-Stout fourth with 894, UW-Superior fifth with 906, UW-Platteville sixth with 936, UW-River Falls seventh with 974 and UW-Oshkosh eighth with 998.
The Blugolds entered the final round with a 10-stroke advantage over the Pointers.
UW-Stevens Point has won three league titles in program history after also finishing first in 1997.
UW-Eau Claire’s Katie Maurer recorded a 45-hole total of 194 to claim medalist honors in the 46-participant field. Her title marks the sixth straight season a Blugold has finished first in the WIAC championship (Susan Karlman - 2003, Maggie Loney - 2004 & 2005, Torie Ives - 2006, Meghan Sobotta - 2007).
UW-Eau Claire’s Torie Ives and UW-Stevens Point’s Nacheynah Green tied for second with 202, UW-Stevens Point’s Jessica Urban fourth with 203, UW-Whitewater’s Diana Schmidt fifth with 205, UW-Stevens Point’s Michelle Pascavis sixth with 207, UW-Platteville’s Michelle Ebert seventh with 208, UW-Whitewater’s Chelsea Davis eighth with 209 and UW-Stevens Point’s Danelle Olson ninth with 210, while UW-Eau Claire’s Lauren Gault, Katie Swift and Sara Mattes and UW-Stout’s Molly Loney tied for 10th with 216.
UW-Eau Claire head coach John Means was voted the Coach of the Year, while UW-Whitewater’s Diana Schmidt was the recipient of the WIAC Judy Kruckman Women’s Golf Scholar-Athlete Award.
