Salem, Va.--Danny Jones’ one-yard touchdown plunge with 1:33 remaining in the game lifted UW-Whitewater to a 31-21 victory over Mount Union College (Ohio) in the NCAA Division III football national championship game on Dec. 15.

The national title is the first in program history and first for a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference school since UW-La Crosse claimed the 1995 trophy with a 36-7 triumph over Rowan University (N.J.).

This year’s contest was the third straight title bout between the Warhawks and Purple Raiders.  The Purple Raiders won the previous two meetings and nine of the last 14 national championships.  Mount Union also entered the game riding a 37-game winning streak.

”I’ve said along that we have a great group of seniors and that they played their hearts out,” explained UW-Whitewater head coach Lance Leipold.  “Our staff did an outstanding job in making sure we believe.  I can’t say how proud I am of our guys and the rest of our program.”

Mount Union entered the game allowing just 5.2 points per game and compiling a NCAA-best 54.1 points per game on offense.

The Warhawks expanded their lead on the opening drive of the second half when Mike Sherman recovered a Justin Beaver fumble in the end zone to give UW-Whitewater a 17-0 lead.   The touchdown capped a 12-play, 71-yard drive.

Mount Union countered with a pair of Nate Kmic touchdown runs to get within 17-14.

Cerroni Named UW-Oshkosh Head Football Coach

RELEASED:  Tuesday, December 11, 2007

Oshkosh, Wis.--Pat Cerroni's tenure as head football coach at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh began last January, but on Tuesday (Dec. 11), his position became permanent when director of athletics Allen Ackerman removed the interim tag from his title.

"Eleven months ago, we announced that we would have a nation-wide search for our head football coaching position," said Ackerman. "Following the search, we felt that Pat was the most qualified individual to lead our football program for the foreseeable future."

As UW-Oshkosh's interim head coach this past fall, Cerroni guided the Titans to a 7-3 record and a third-place finish in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).  It was UW-Oshkosh's highest finish in the WIAC standings since 1976 and just its sixth seven-win season in the 113-year history of the program.

"I’m very humbled about the opportunity to become the 21st person to lead this football program," said Cerroni. "I want to thank the administration at UW-Oshkosh for showing a lot of confidence in me. I also want to thank my coaching staff and players for their contributions this past season."

Since 2000, Cerroni has been the defensive coordinator at UW-Oshkosh, with his units ranking second in the WIAC in total defense in each of the past five seasons. This past year, the Titans ranked 17th in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III in scoring defense (15.0), 22nd in pass efficiency defense (93.6) and 52nd in total defense (297.5).

"Pat has served our football program well as an assistant coach and later as an interim head coach," said Ackerman. "He is a leader who knows our program. In addition, he has earned the respect of our student-athletes and proven to be an excellent recruiter."

Cerroni, 42, came to UW-Oshkosh following three seasons as the head football coach at Menomonee Falls High School. In 1997, Cerroni guided the Indians to a 7-4 record and an upset of defending state champion Hartland Arrowhead High School in the first round of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) Division 1 Playoffs.

Prior to his head coaching stint at Menomonee Falls High School, Cerroni was as an assistant football coach at Hartland Arrowhead and Waukesha Catholic Memorial high schools. During his four seasons at Waukesha Catholic Memorial High School, Cerroni helped the Crusaders to Wisconsin Independent Schools Athletic Association (WISAA) Division 1 state titles in 1993 and 1996.

Cerroni is a 1992 graduate of Carroll College (Wis.), where he was a member of the school’s 1988 football team that shared the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) title with Augustana College (Ill.). The Johnson Creek native earned his master’s degree from UW-Oshkosh in 2004.

Cerroni and his wife, Tammy, are the parents of two children, daughter Kali and son Kyle.

"We have earned respect within the conference the past eight seasons," said Cerroni. "Now, we have the opportunity to build on that respect and take the program to the next level of contending for a conference championship."

UW-Oshkosh's head football coaching position became available last January when Phil Meyer resigned after seven seasons to become the offensive line coach at the University of Minnesota.

USA Defeats Mexico In Aztec Bowl

RELEASED: Monday, December 9, 2007

Chihuahua, Mexico--The United States ground game chewed up 7:37 on 16 plays over two fourth quarter scoring drives to outlast Mexico, 37-19, at the 2007 Aztec Bowl in Chihuahua, Mexico tonight.

Team USA is now 10-1 against Mexico in the series.

Clinging to a 23-13 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, Team USA got an interception from DePauw’s Jevon Pruitt at the Mexico 45-yard line and St. John’s quarterback Alex Kofoed engineered a seven-play scoring drive that ended with Luther’s Tyler Sherdan scoring from 14 yards out to up the score to 30-13 with 10:06 to go in the game.

Following a Mexico punt on the next series Team USA took over at the USA 31 with 7:17 to go. Dubuque’s Jemar Jackson led a nine-play, 69-yard drive that ended with Anderson’s Denny Kimmel finding the end zone on a 24-yard run to make the score 37-13 with 3:06 remaining.

The final touchdown drive also featured two third-and-one conversions on runs of 3 yards and 12 yards by Alfred defensive lineman Don Miller. Miller also had a first down rushing in the first half to finish with 18 yards on three carries.

Mexico added a late touchdown with just under a minute left for the final margin.

Dubuque’s Jackson took home MVP honors for Team USA after completing 7-of-17 passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns. He also carried 10 times for 42 yards.

“The key was getting into the flow of the game,” Jackson said. “Once I did I was able to do what the coaches expected me to do. I’m just really grateful to be the MVP of Team USA. We played as a team tonight and I’ll always remember how we came together as a team.”

St. John’s Kofoed set Aztec Bowl records for completions and attempts as he was 11-of-21 for 128 yards and a touchdown pass.

“I think the turning point in the game was the third quarter,” Head Coach Bill Manlove said. “Holding them to two field goals along with the interception in the end zone was critical. The two drives at the end iced it. We just pounded it.”

Team USA jumped out to a 23-7 halftime lead with three second quarter touchdowns to erase a 7-3 Mexico lead at the end of the first quarter.

After a fumble recovery by Central’s Guy Dierikx, Jackson connected with Moravian’s Kris Bisci from eight yards out for a 10-7 lead with 13:27 to go in the half.

Team USA then scored twice in a 2:50 span in the second quarter. First, Kofoed found Colorado College’s Nolan Swett for a 35-yard scoring strike. Monmouth’s Nate Palkovic nailed the PAT and the Americans led 17-7 with 3:27 left in the half.

Following an interception by Linfield’s Andrew Woods, Jackson found Mississippi College’s Jake Allen for a four-yard touchdown pass on third and goal. The point after was wide left and Team USA had a 23-7 lead heading into the locker room.

Mexico’s Erick Gomez hit a pair of field goals from 40 and 31-yards to cut into the U.S. lead in the third quarter. Mexico’s inability to find the end zone in that stanza was due in large part to a USA defense that came up with two interceptions by Centre’s Tyler Moody and Central’s Dieikx. The second interception by Dierikx ended a Mexico scoring drive in the end zone.
Team USA scored first as Palkovic converted a 33-yard field goal into a stiff breeze with 5:11 gone in the opening quarter.

Mexico answered with an 18-yard scoring pass from Ivan Valdez to Adrian Gonzalez with 5:07 left in the first quarter.

Offensively, Team USA had 397 yards in total offense – 206 through the air and 191 rushing.

Swett, Allen and St. Olaf’s Horace Gant led the way with three receptions each. Swett led the squad with 43 yards receiving.

Kimmel carried the ball six times for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Delaware Valley’s Jon Pursell and Rowan’s Randy Tosh led the way with six tackles. Tosh also had a sack and two tackles for loss as the USA defense limited Mexico to 20 yards rushing on 29 carries. Mexico threw for 279 yards.

Repeat selections on the first team offense included:  UW-Oshkosh senior running back Andy Moriarty, along with UW-Whitewater senior center Brent Allen and sophomore kicker Jeff Schebler.

Dallas, Texas--University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student-athlete Tony Hull, a three-year letterwinner, has been named one of 153 semifinalists for the 2007 Draddy Trophy, presented by HealthSouth, and a candidate for the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) 2007 National Scholar-Athlete Awards, the NFF recently announced.

Hull, a native of Blaine, Minn. (Spring Lake Park H.S.), is a biochemistry/molecular biology major who maintains a 3.55 grade-point average. On the football field, Hull is a team captain, has started five games this season as a receiver and leads the team in receptions with 17. He is also second on the team in number of kick returns, with seven for 118 yards. Hull has made an impact on the team in previous seasons, obtaining records for ninth place all-time for most passes caught in a game in 2005, 14th place for most passes caught in a season in 2004, and 19th place for most yards in a season in 2004. Outside of football, Hull is a member of Beta Beta Beta biological honor society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the American Chemical Society. He has been on the university’s Dean’s List twice and received academic distinction honors eight times.

One of college football's most sought after and competitive awards, the Draddy Trophy recognizes an individual as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership. Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, semifinalists must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. Established to honor former NFF Chairman Vincent dePaul Draddy, a Manhattan College quarterback who developed the Izod and Lacoste brands, the award comes with a 24-inch, 25-pound bronze trophy and a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship.

This year's semifinalists maintain a 3.58 average GPA in diverse majors such as physics and ocean engineering. Sixty-six players have earned all-conference recognition on the field and 106 have served as captains. The offensive line produced the most nominees with 31 candidates. Receivers and linebackers followed with 26 nominees each. Offense outscored the defense with 80 to 53 hopefuls. Twenty special teams aspirants completed the contingent. Nominees hail from all NCAA divisions and the NAIA, including a record 67 contenders from the Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A).

The NFF Awards Committee will select and announce up to 15 finalists on Oct. 25. Each finalist will be recognized as part of the 2007 National Scholar- Athlete Class, receiving an $18,000 post-graduate scholarship. The Draddy winner, who will receive a $25,000 postgraduate scholarship, will be announced at the NFF's Annual Awards Dinner on December 4 at the prestigious Waldorf=Astoria in New York City. A total distribution of more than $300,000 in scholarships will be awarded that evening.

Launched in 1959, the NFF scholar-athlete program became the first initiative in history to credit a player for both academic and athletic accomplishments. The Draddy, first awarded in 1990, adds to the program's mystique. Past Draddy winners, including two Rhodes Scholars, a Rhodes Scholar finalist and a Heisman winner, had a 3.7 average GPA.

UW-Whitewater Tabbed To Win Third Consecutive Football Title

RELEASED: Tuesday, August 7, 2007

Madison, Wis.--University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the two-time defending conference champion, is projected to win the 2007 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) football championship, according to the league’s sports information directors.

The Warhawks, ranked No. 2 nationally in the D3football.com Preseason Top 25, received seven first-place votes in the conference predictions.  UW-Whitewater has reached the NCAA Division III national championship game - the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl - the last two seasons and won 14 consecutive WIAC regular-season contests by an average margin of 26.7 points per game, while allowing 10 points or less in seven of those victories.

Lance Leipold begins his first season as head coach of the Warhawks after serving as associate head coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Nebraska-Omaha from 2004-06.  He is also a former UW-Whitewater assistant coach and was the team’s quarterback from 1983-86.  Leipold replaces Bob Berezowitz, who finished his 22-year career third on the WIAC all-time list with a 158-73-4 record.

Senior running back Justin Beaver has amassed 4,129 career rushing yards and is only 299 yards shy of breaking the conference’s all-time mark of 4,427 set by UW-Stout’s Luke Bundgaard from 2000-03. Beaver is also within reach of the league’s all-time record of 967 career attempts by UW-Whitewater’s Chad Wurth from 2000-03.  Beaver enters the 2007 campaign with 744 carries.

Senior punter Nick Croak has totaled 8,079 career punting yards and is just one of two players in league history to surpass the 8,000-yard mark.  The Warhawks’ Joel Gmack holds the WIAC record with 8,997 yards from 1982-85.

UW-La Crosse received the remaining first-place vote in the conference poll and is expected to finish second in the eight-team league derby.  The Eagles, ranked No. 7 nationally in the D3football.com poll, have won a conference-best 33 championships (most recently 2004) and reached the NCAA Division III playoffs four of the last five seasons.

The 2007 campaign marks the final season home games will be played at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field where the Eagles have compiled a 214-67-9 all-time record (.753 winning percentage), including 86-16 (.843) in the last 20 years.  A new stadium will be constructed in 2008 and open in 2009.  Quarterbacks Griffin Moe (junior) and Gus Almonroeder (sophomore) have not attempted a pass during their careers at UW-La Crosse.

UW-Oshkosh will be under the guidance of first-year head coach Pat Cerroni, who served as the team’s defensive coordinator the past seven seasons.  The Titans’ 2007 roster has 28 seniors, including 15 who have started a minimum of 10 games.  Senior running back Andy Moriarty enters the season with a school-record 2,806 career rushing yards.  Only five players in conference history have surpassed 4,000 career rushing yards.  Senior placekicker Lucas Raschke has booted a WIAC-record 36 career field goals.  His total currently ranks 12th in NCAA Division III history.

UW-Stevens Point has posted a .500 or better overall record 21 of the last 23 years and enters the season riding a four-game winning streak, having won their last four WIAC games in 2006 by a combined 10 points, including two overtime bouts.  The Pointers welcome back senior defensive end Dan Robinson, an all-WIAC first team performer in 2005, who suffered a season-ending injury in the first contest last year.

UW-Platteville scored at least 21 points in eight of 10 games last year and held five teams to 21 or fewer points, the first time since 1999 the defense accomplished that feat.  Junior running back Mike Genslinger recorded the first 1,000-yard rushing season (1,028 yards) for the Pioneers since 1994.  His 285 yards against UW-River Falls were the most in school history.  The 285 yards would have been UW-Platteville’s highest season total in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003.  He is the first Pioneer to lead the league in rushing since Marty Sturzl in 1984.

UW-River Falls head coach John O’Grady begins his 19th season needing just five wins to reach 100 in his career and become just the seventh coach in WIAC history to reach the milestone.  Senior running back Nathan Anderson has rushed for more than 100 yards in 13 games in his career.  He had a career-best 230-yard performance against UW-Eau Claire in 2005.  The Falcons’ non-conference schedule features a pair of league champions from 2006 - St. John’s University (Minn.) and Hope College (Mich.).

UW-Eau Claire has registered a .500 or better overall record in nine of the last 11 seasons.  Four of seven losses in 2006 were by four points or less, including two in overtime.  Senior punter Mitch Schaeuble owns the school career record for punt average at 39.5 yards per kick and uncorked the second-longest punt in WIAC history with an 83-yard boot against UW-Whitewater last year.  Sophomore kicker Craig Kolb set a school single-season record with 11 field goals in 2006.

Duey Naatz enters his first season as UW-Stout’s head coach after spending the last 17 years as an assistant coach with the program under the direction of three different head coaches.  Five of UW-Stout’s seven defeats a year ago were by four points or less, including a pair of one point losses.  Senior quarterback Tanner Kattre was responsible for one-half of the Blue Devils’ offense during the 2006 campaign with 148 yards per game.
