Pointers Eighth Inning Rally Tops Titans UW-Stevens
Point rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning for a
come-from-behind victory in the second game of the WIAC Baseball
Tournament. UW-Oshkosh
opened up a 4-0 lead after four and a half innings with Ned Yost ripping
two doubles and a triple and scoring three of the Titans. Nat Richter
got the Pointers’ on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a
two-run homer off the top of the outfield fence. Still trailing
4-2 in the seventh inning, the Pointers’ Ben Warwick hit an RBI double
to centerfield, scoring Richter from first base. UW-Stevens Point added
a tying run in the eighth on a bases loaded passed ball, before Matt
Polomis grounded a single up the middle to score Ryan Jones and Steve
Wiczek for a 6-4 lead. The Pointers
were led at the plate by Richter who went two-for-two with a pair of
walks. J.C. Reinke earned the complete game victory for the Pointers
allowing four runs on 10 Titan hits, while striking out six.
Reinke allowed just two hits over the last four innings. Yost supplied much of the Titans’ offense with three extra base hits in his first three at-bats. Bryan Schwebke picked up a pair of singles in a two-for-four night. Righthander Ben Huffman went the distance for UW-Oshkosh allowing just seven hits and striking out 10 hitters. The loss was just Huffman’s sixth setback in 31 career decisions. UW-Stevens Point will advance to face UW-Whitewater at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Titans will play UW-Platteville in an elimination game at 10:00 p.m. The schedule for the WIAC tournament was delayed by five hours on Friday due to rain. |
