Warhawks Play Long Ball to Hold off Pioneers UW-Platteville
gave top seeded UW-Whitewater everything they could handle, but the
Warhawks finally put the Pioneers away 17-7 in the first game of the
WIAC Baseball Tournament in Wisconsin Rapids. UW-Platteville
spotted UW-Whitewater a 4-0 lead over the first two innings and then
battled back with runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to trim
the lead to 8-7. But the
Warhawks, the highest scoring team in the nation, exploded for nine runs
in the bottom of the seventh to end the game by virtue of the 10-run
rule. The Warhawks
blasted three home runs including a solo shot by Aaron Soto to start the
seventh inning and a two-run homer by Jeff Newcomer to end the game.
Ross Klawitter hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning and scored
four runs. Dan Gnatzig went four-for-five with a pair of doubles. UW-Platteville
was led by Matt Huckstep who hit a two-run home run to the opposite
field in the sixth inning. He added a double and a single, and drove in
four runs. David Reifenberger chipped in pair of doubles in four
at-bats. Andrew Keller earned the win for UW-Whitewater, allowing four earned runs on seven hits over five innings of work. Gregg Riek got the last two outs of the seventh inning to earn his first save of the season. Ryan Slaght was saddled with the loss allowing six earned runs over six innings. The Pioneers committed five errors leading to nine unearned Warhawk runs. UW-Whitewater will advance to face the winner of the UW-Stevens Point/UW-Oshkosh game at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Pioneers will play in an elimination game at 10:00 p.m. The schedule for the WIAC tournament was delayed by five hours on Friday due to rain. |
