Fueled by a trio of three-run home runs, UW-Stevevens Point stayed alive in the WIAC baseball tournament by defeating UW-Whitewater 14-7 in the first of two championship games. The winner of game 7 will earn the conferences automatic bid to the NCAA Division III regional tournament Ryan Byrnes struck first for the Pointers with his blast in the third inning, which put UWSP up 4-0. Whitewater came back with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Nat Richter's home run in the fourth broke the 4-4 tie and gave UWSP the lead for good. Doug Coe was the final home run hitter for the Pointers, hitting his shot as part of the Pointers' five-run sixth inning. UWSP got 8 1/3 innings from Travis Kempf who earned the win by striking out two, while walking a pair and scattering 11 hits. UWW scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth. Whitewater used four pitchers in the losing effort. Records: UWSP 28-15; UWW 30-13.
