2007 WIAC Baseball Athletes of the Week
Week of April 30 - May 6
Position
Bryan Schwebke, Senior (Oshkosh/West), Outfield of UW-Oshkosh
Schwebke hit .563 (9-16) with two home runs, two triples, one double and seven RBIs as UW-Oshkosh swept doubleheaders from Wisconsin Lutheran College and Marian College. Schwebke also scored eight runs, compiled a slugging percentage of 1.250 and an on-base percentage of .588. In UW-Oshkosh’s doubleheader sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran College on May 4, Schwebke went five-for-eight at the plate with two home runs, one double, five RBIs and five runs scored. In UW-Oshkosh’s doubleheader sweep of Marian College on May 6, Schwebke extended his hitting streak to 18 consecutive games by totaling four hits in eight at-bats. He also compiled two triples, three runs scored and two RBIs against the Sabres.

Matt Doornink, Sophomore (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park), Righthanded Pitcher of UW-Stout
Doornink made four appearances in four games last week, all in relief, earning one win and two saves. In 5.1 innings pitched last week, he allowed only one hit, no runs, walked two and struck out seven, including the final Pioneer batters in both games on May 7. UW-Stout went 4-0 at UW-Platteville and earned their first trip to the WIAC Tournament since 1999.

Storm Gram, Sophomore (Woodbury, Minn.), Secondbase of UW-La Crosse
Gram hit .680 (17-of-25) in six games last week with 10 runs scored and nine RBIs. He had five doubles, one homerun and three walks. Gram registered four multi-hit games, including two contests with four hits. He was six-of-nine with three doubles and five RBIs in a doubleheader against UW-Platteville on April 25 and then went 11-of-16 with nine runs scored, two doubles, a homerun and four RBIs in a four-game series with UW-Whitewater on April 28-29.

Hemstead was 1-0 for the week and pitched eight solid innings with seven strikeouts in a 9-3 victory over UW-Oshkosh on April 29. In a no-decision against UW-Stout on April 25, he scattered five hits in seven innings. In 15.0 innings pitched during the week, Hemstead gave up 13 hits and five runs, while striking out 12 batters and allowing four walks.

Ross Bennett, Junior (Mequon/Homestead), Firstbase of UW-Platteville
In seven games, Bennett hit .522 (12-23) with 11 runs scored, four doubles, a triple and two home runs while knocking in 11 runs. He also walked four times and was hit by six pitches for an on-base percentage of .647. Bennett, who had a slugging percentage of 1.043, helped the Pioneers beat Edgewood College, split with UW-La Crosse and go 1-2-1 with UW-Whitewater. His three-run home run on April 21 brought the Pioneers within 9-8 of the Warhawks in a game they would go on to win 19-12, and his solo shot on April 17 gave UW-Platteville the lead for good at 4-3 vs. Edgewood.

Zimmermann led the Pointers to a 1-0 win over UW-Stout on April 18. He pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 11 batters and walking four.

Adam Evanoff, Senior (Plover/SPASH), Firstbase of UW-Stevens Point
Evanoff helped UW-Stevens Point to six victories in eight games after batting .571 (20-for-35) with 19 RBIs, 12 runs scored, five doubles and one home run. He had six multi-hit games, including two four-hit performances and two three-hit efforts. Evanhoff also compiled multiple RBIs in seven of the contests. He was three-for-five with four RBIs and two runs scored in an 18-8 win over UW-Superior on April 14 and four-for-six with three RBIs and two doubles in a 10-2 triumph over the Yellowjackets on April 15.

Brian Gerl, Senior (Manawa/Little Wolf), Righthanded Pitcher of UW-Oshkosh
Gerl pitched in six of UW-Oshkosh’s eight games played and compiled a 2-1 record with two saves. He hurled 14.1 innings without allowing an earned run, holding opponents to just eight hits in 51 at-bats (.157 average). Gerl allowed a total of two runs, while walking one batter and striking out 13. He had two wins and a save in UW-Oshkosh’s four-game sweep of UW-La Crosse on April 9-10. He pitched 6.1 scoreless innings against the Eagles, allowing just four hits. Gerl earned a save to help UW-Oshkosh win three of its four games against UW-Platteville on April 14-15. He tossed eight innings against the Pioneers, yielding just two unearned runs and four hits.

Fosler hit .667 (6-9) with two doubles, one home run, three runs scored and five RBIs as UW-Oshkosh swept a doubleheader from UW-Stout on April 2. In UW-Oshkosh’s 11-5 victory in game one, Fosler went three-for-five at the plate. He had a double in the first inning and run-scoring singles in the fourth and sixth innings. In the Titans’ 10-8 victory in game two, Fosler went three-for-four at the plate. He had a run-scoring double in the first inning and a two-run home run in the fourth.

Nix pitched a one-hit complete-game shutout in UW-Stevens Point’s 5-0 seven-inning win at UW-Platteville on April 2. He struck out nine batters and walked two and allowed only a second inning single. It was his sixth career start and first complete game.

As UW-Stout went 2-2 on the week, Maier hit .692, going 9-for-13 at the plate, with eight runs scored and six RBIs. He had three home runs, two doubles and a triple in the four games. His slugging percentage was 1.692 and – along with two walks and one hit by pitch – had an on-base percentage of .706. Maier had three multi-hit games and had two three-hit performances.

Brad Archambeau, Freshman (Watertown), Outfield of UW-Stevens Point
Archambeau batted .444 (12-for-27) with three doubles, one home run, eight runs scored and eight RBIs during the week. He also had four walks for a .516 on-base percentage. Archambeau had multiple hits in five of the six games, including two games of three hits. He went three-for-six with three runs scored, two doubles and one RBI in a 22-13 victory over Manchester College (Ind.) on March 19.

Rubens pitched all nine innings in UW-Oshkosh’s 8-2 victory over Millikin University (Ill.) on March 20. He surrendered two earned runs, scattered five hits and struck out 12 batters, including nine looking. Rubens allowed two walks in the contest as the Titans improved to 5-1 following the victory over the Big Blue.

Week of Feb. 28 - March 18
Position
Andy Podmolik, Senior (Phillips), Centerfield of UW-La Crosse
Podmolik hit .537 (22-for-41) to help UW-La Crosse to a 7-3 record at the Greater Phoenix Invitational. He led the team in hits (22), at-bats (41), doubles (6), triples (2), total bases (32), walks (12) and steals (6). Podmolik had seven multi-hit games and finished with at least one hit in nine of 10 games. He also had five multi-run games and was six-for-six in stolen base attempts. Podmolik was five-for-six in UW-La Crosse’s 12-9 victory over Marian College (Wis.) on March 12. The five hits are tied for second in single-game school history.

In 10.2 innings pitched, Bretl earned one victory and one save as he allowed four hits, one unearned run and had nine strikeouts with one walk. He earned the save in a 5-1 triumph over North Central College (Ill.) on March 17 after working 4.0 innings and allowing two hits, one walk, one unearned run and striking out four. In a 5-3 win over St. Norbert College on March 18, Bretl pitched 6.2 innings of relief, allowing two hits and recording five strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season.
